North Manchester Clinical Commissioning Group is made up of local GPs who are responsible for commissioning (planning and buying) health services for the 190,000 people of North Manchester.

Victoria Mill Medical Practice is part of NHS North Manchester and runs many clinics for the management of chronic diseases such as asthma and diabetes, and offer a wide variety of other medical services including minor surgery, childhood vaccinations and well-person check-ups.

The Challenge

Covering 36 local GP surgeries, from Blackley to Beswick and Crumpsall to Moston, NHS North Manchester approached X-on with a critical need to enable communication between day and night nurses in the absence of managers and administrative staff. Additionally the service needed to provide patients with a facility to phone in and leave messages for staff.

The Solution

X-on supplied NHS North Manchester with a 'Voice Noticeboard' phone line messaging and voicemail service, which allows District Nurses to hear messages from patients by regularly phoning in. Day and night nurses can also leave messages as part of the handover process. Any delegated person can access information quickly and securely from a remote location.

The messaging phone line number is documented on the home records of all patients receiving care from the District Nursing Service and can be accessed 24/7.

NHS Manchester Says

"The DNs access the Voice Noticeboard at least three times daily, and the night nurses two hourly, to pick up any messages from patients.

"In addition to patient usage the main usage relates to inter-colleague and other health professional communication. This is particularly useful between day and night district nursing colleagues. There are eight DN centres who use the Voice Noticeboard as a daily communication link with their night time colleagues.

"At weekend and Bank Holidays, in the absence of managers and administrative staff, night nurses who are unable to report for their rostered shifts, due to sickness or any reason, leave a message on the Voice Noticeboard, which can then be accessed in the daytime to arrange cover."
